Guy Gruppie Selected as “Top Attorney” by Pasadena Magazine for Second Consecutive Year

Guy R. Gruppie has been named a San Gabriel Valley “Top Attorney” for the second consecutive year in a survey of peers and judges conducted by Pasadena Magazine.

Attorneys and judges from the San Gabriel Valley and metropolitan Los Angeles area cast votes for the lawyers who, according to their peers, are most esteemed in their practice specialties. Mr. Gruppie was named to the 2010 “Top Attorney” list in the category of Personal Injury Litigation. He is the chair of M&C’s Emerging Risks & Specialty Tort Litigation practice group and is also a member of the firm’s Product Liability and General Liability practice groups, the latter of which he chaired from 2004 to 2009.

Mr. Gruppie is a 10-year resident of Arcadia with other ties to the San Gabriel Valley. He is a member of the Pasadena Bar Association, a volunteer coach and sponsor of the Arcadia American Little League, and has been a participant in the City of Arcadia’s annual Law Day.

Dan Longo and Bryan Weiss to Speak at PLRB Regional Conferences

Dan L. Longo, partner-in-charge of the firm’s Orange County office and Bryan M. Weiss, co-chair of the firm’s Insurance Law practice group, have been selected to speak at the Property Loss Research Bureau’s (“PLRB”) 2010 Regional Adjusters Conferences.  Mr. Longo’s presentation is “Soft Tissue Injuries” and Mr. Weiss’ presentation is “When Is Independent Counsel Needed?”.

Both Mr. Longo and Mr. Weiss will present at three conferences held in Atlanta, Georgia from June 22-23, 2010 for the eastern region, Columbus, Ohio from September 14-15, 2010 for the central region, and Anaheim, California from November 2-3, 2010 for the western region.

M&C Welcomes Two Associates to its Los Angeles and Nevada Offices

LOS ANGELES – Murchison & Cumming, LLP is pleased to announce that Mary C. Trinh and Bryan J. Ure have joined the Los Angeles and Nevada offices, respectively, as associates.

Ms. Trinh is a member of the Emerging Risks & Specialty Tort Litigation practice group, also focusing her practice in general liability and product liability matters.

Her previous experience includes working for the State Bar of California and handling a wide variety of general liability matters for a boutique firm. Ms. Trinh, who is fluent in Chinese dialect Chiu Chau, has also been actively involved with the community. While in college, she tutored students at Castelar Street Elementary School in the Chinatown area of Los Angeles.

Mr. Ure focuses his practice in the areas of general liability, construction defect and premises liability, representing businesses, insurers and subcontractors in the State and Federal Courts.

He is experienced in all phases of litigation and advising on construction law, mechanics lien law, state contractor’s board issues, administrative law and representation before the public utilities commission. Mr. Ure, who previously worked at a Las Vegas-based civil litigation firm, said he joined Murchison & Cumming because he was impressed by the firm’s reputation.

Carlos Needham, formerly a partner at Manatt, Phelps, & Phillips, LLP, focuses his practice on insurance coverage/bad faith and complex civil litigation matters involving product liability, science-related issues, mass tort claims, consumer class actions and environmental matters. “Murchison and Cumming’s well-respected coverage practice and its excellent product liability and commercial coverage practices make the firm a perfect fit for me,” said Mr. Needham.

Mr. Needham has represented national and international insurers and manufacturers in some of the highest-profile litigation in the last ten years, including insurance matters adjudicating trigger of coverage issues under CGL policies and representing prescription drug and medical device manufacturers in matters such as Vioxx and welding rod litigation. He has specialized in science-based challenges to plaintiffs’ causation theories and has also handled numerous complex commercial contract disputes in various contexts, including entertainment, construction, employment, and commercial real estate. He also has considerable experience in the defense of consumer and mass tort class actions. As part of his pro bono work, Mr. Needham has taken disability litigation matters before the Court of Veteran Appeals, on behalf of veterans.

Steven Spronz is a business and real estate transactions attorney who has represented a broad spectrum of domestic and foreign business entities, including public and private equity funds, in a variety of transactions including mergers and acquisitions; partnership, joint venture, financing and corporate business matters; and the acquisition, disposition, financing, development and leasing of real estate.

Mr. Spronz also serves as a private mediator, a mediator for the Los Angeles Superior Court, and has served as a mediation-training coach for the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office. Long active in the international arena, each year Mr. Spronz spends a month in Johannesburg, South Africa as a Law Professor, teaching a Commercial Law Practicum in a program jointly sponsored by the American Bar Association, the Black Lawyers Association of South Africa, and the International Senior Lawyers Project. In the 1990’s, he participated in the environmental issues section of the academic conferences among Israel and the Palestinians, which paralleled the Multilateral Talks (the Madrid Process).

Molly Healy has joined the firm’s Insurance Law practice group and also practices in the areas of product and general liability defense.

A recent graduate of the University of Santa Clara Law School, Ms. Healy interned for the Northern California Innocence Project, volunteered with New Orleans Legal Aid, and was a mentor with Fresh Lifelines for Youth, which works to reduce juvenile crime by providing at-risk and disadvantaged youth with vital information regarding the decisions they make in their lives. She was honored with a Public Interest and Social Justice Law Certificate and Pro Bono Recognition Award for her work. Prior to attending law school, Ms. Healy worked in Washington, DC for two years after graduation from Georgetown University, where she was a Big-East Academic All-Star (2000-2003) and Captain of Georgetown’s Women’s Volleyball Team.

Partner Heather Mills Makes First Appearance on Annual List

Murchison & Cumming Elevates Two Attorneys In the Partnership Ranks: Product Liability Trial Attorneys Richard Moreno and Paul Flaherty

LOS ANGELES -January 4, 2010 – Murchison & Cumming, LLP is pleased to announce that, effective January 1, 2010, Richard C. Moreno, Chair of the Transportation Liability Practice Group, will become a Senior Partner of the firm and Paul R. Flaherty will become an Associate Partner.

Mr. Moreno focuses his practice in the areas of transportation, product liability, general liability, warranty liability, and the defense of utility companies, in wildland fire litigation. An experienced trial attorney respected for his in-depth case preparation, Mr. Moreno serves as lead counsel, along with firm Senior Partner Friedrich W. Seitz, in defending wildland fire lawsuits. These discovery-intensive, complex cases benefit greatly from Mr. Moreno’s acumen in liability and damage evaluation and efficient case management.

The defense of automotive, chassis, and truck manufacturers and dealerships in “lemon law” and other warranty claims is also a significant aspect of Mr. Moreno’s practice. He has obtained several defense verdicts for Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation, including one received in the company’s first case to go to verdict. Mr. Moreno specializes in the handling of catastrophic injury cases and has extensive trial experience in matters involving multiple wrongful deaths and quadriplegics.

A career-long attorney of Murchison & Cumming, Mr. Moreno earned his J.D. from Whittier College School of Law, where he was the recipient of the American Jurisprudence Award in Immigration Law and Criminal Law. Mr. Moreno was awarded his undergraduate degree from the University of Southern California.

Paul Flaherty has spent the past decade as an attorney with the firm. His practice emphasis is on defense of product liability, aviation and general tort lawsuits. Mr. Flaherty excels in cases involving complex mechanical and technical issues. The benefit of these skills was recently highlighted in a wrongful death trial involving a private plane crash which resulted in a defense verdict after a six-week trial.
